Automatic Digital Penetrometer
Penetrometer - Equipment for bituminous binder (bitumen) analysis
Determining the consistency and hardness of bituminous binders is fundamental, as these properties define how asphalt will behave in service, ensuring the quality and durability of asphalt mixtures used in highways and other road infrastructure.
Consistency: Indicates whether the binder is soft or hard at different temperatures. This is key to selecting the appropriate bitumen grade based on climate and traffic levels. A binder that is too soft may deform easily in hot climates or under heavy loads, while one that is too hard may crack in cold conditions.
Hardness: Related to the binder’s resistance to penetration and deformation. Proper hardness ensures that the pavement maintains its shape and supports traffic loads without premature failure.
Automatic Digital Penetrometer (20-20670)
Function: Measures the penetration of a needle into bitumen to evaluate its consistency.
Standards: EN 1426, ASTM D5, AASHTO T49
Applications: Binder grading, quality control of soft and hard bitumen.
Advantages: Automatic and manual measurement, touchscreen display, internal memory for up to 15,000 tests.
Features: Resolution: 0.01 mm, 100 g load, adjustable test time from 0.01 s, range 0–30 mm.
Automatic Digital Penetrometer (20-20670)
The digital penetrometer is functional and essential for resistance testing in both soils and bituminous binders, as it allows for the precise and repeatable determination of consistency and hardness in these materials. For petroleum products such as bitumen, the penetrometer measures the depth that a standard needle can penetrate the sample under controlled conditions of load, time, and temperature. This indicates whether the material is soft or hard and, therefore, its suitability for use in pavements based on climate and traffic conditions.
In soils, the principle is similar: the penetration of a standard body into the soil allows for the estimation of its resistance and bearing capacity—key information for the design of foundations and pavement design.
Main Features
- Electronic position measurement system: enables precise recording of penetration depth, ensuring reliable and repeatable results.
- Decoupled plunger measurement: during the test, the system decouples from the plunger to eliminate any influence of additional load or friction, enhancing the accuracy of the assay.
- Automatic and manual control: the needle’s ascent and descent can be performed automatically or manually via joystick, providing operational flexibility.
- Graphic touchscreen: displays test results in real-time, facilitating data reading and analysis.
The functionality of the penetrometer lies in the following:
It provides objective and quantifiable results regarding the material’s resistance and consistency.
It allows for the comparison of different batches or types of materials to select the most suitable one.
It facilitates quality control, ensuring that materials comply with technical specifications and international standards (such as EN 1426, ASTM D5, and AASHTO T49 for bitumen).
Its automatic operation and electronic precision minimize human errors and improve the repeatability of the tests.
