Functional Evaluation of Pavements at Rafael Núñez Airport

Strinso carried out the functional evaluation of pavements on the runway of the Rafael Núñez International Airport, located in the city of Cartagena, Colombia. This project was requested by OINAC and focused primarily on measuring the friction coefficient ($\mu$) of the runway, integrating the monitoring actions of pavement performance and the operational safety conditions of the airport.

The measurements were performed before and after the process of removing accumulated rubber (rubber removal) on the pavement surface, aiming to verify the effectiveness of said intervention and its impact on friction levels.

The objective of this project was to measure the friction coefficient on the runway of the Rafael Núñez Airport, before and after rubber removal, using the Grip Tester equipment, to evaluate maintenance effectiveness and verify compliance with the provisions of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory circular AC150/5320-12C.

This project was key to guaranteeing operational safety standards in the airport’s air operations, and provided OINAC with accurate information for the preventive maintenance management of the pavement in critical landing and takeoff zones.

Functional Evaluation of Pavements

The friction coefficient measurement was performed using the Grip Tester equipment at speeds of 60 mph (95 km/h) and 40 mph (65 km/h).

Analysis of Results

The final measurement report will be delivered:

Graphical and tabulated reports of friction values.

  • Compliance indicators by section and speed.

  • Results organized by runway direction and measured line.

  • Detailed analysis, visual representation of results, calculation memory, measurement conditions, temperatures, and compliance/non-compliance with the required minimum values.

  • The current calibration certificate for the Grip Tester equipment was included.
