Structural, functional, and surface pavement evaluation at Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú

Strinso recently carried out structural, functional, and surface pavement evaluations at five concessioned airports located in southern Peru: Arequipa, Ayacucho, Juliaca, Puerto Maldonado, and Tacna. This multi-year project is executed in collaboration with Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú (AAP), under strict international regulations, including those of the FAA (U.S. Federal Aviation Administration), ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).

The main objective of the pavement evaluation project at Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú is to carry out a precise and detailed diagnosis of the current condition of the pavements, evaluating both their functionality and structural capacity. Based on this diagnosis, the remaining service life of the infrastructure is projected, allowing for appropriate planning of preventive maintenance or necessary rehabilitation. All of this is performed to guarantee the safety, operability, and durability of the airport infrastructure, optimizing its performance and ensuring compliance with international quality and safety standards in aviation.

Strinso carries out functional, surface, and structural pavement evaluations at five concessioned airports in southern Peru: Arequipa, Ayacucho, Juliaca, Puerto Maldonado, and Tacna. This multi-year project, commissioned by Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú (AAP), aims to diagnose the current condition of the pavements, project their remaining service life, and provide a reliable technical baseline for the efficient management of airport infrastructure.

The pavement evaluation at Aeropuertos Andinos del Perú is carried out both on the airside —runways, taxiways, and aprons— and on the landside, which includes the vehicular access roads. For this purpose, non-destructive testing is applied using state-of-the-art equipment such as the Heavy Weight Deflectometer (HWD), the Road Surface Profiler (RSP), and the Multi Function Vehicle (MFV). These tools provide precise data on deflections, surface smoothness (BBI), macrotexture, and the Pavement Condition Index (PCI).

The results of these measurements enable the generation of a detailed and georeferenced diagnosis of the pavement condition, which serves as an essential baseline for strategic decision-making regarding preservation, resource prioritization, and maintenance planning.

This work, developed between 2023 and 2024, is based on Strinso’s previous experience during the 2017–2022 period, when the company performed similar work for the same concession. Thanks to the continuity and quality of the data collected over the years, it is possible to analyze the evolution of deterioration, identify behavioral patterns, and guarantee safe, efficient, and sustainable operations.

With this experience, Strinso reaffirms its leadership in pavement evaluation at Andean airports in Peru, providing high-level engineering solutions that optimize the management of airport assets in complex environments with high operational demands.
