Senior Project Coordinator

Strinso executed a comprehensive pavement evaluation at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, covering both the airside (runway, taxiways, aprons) and the landside (access roads, internal roads). The objective was to diagnose the functional, surface, and structural condition of the pavements in accordance with FAA and ICAO standards to design a Pavement Management System that guarantees safe operations, efficiency, and durability of the airport infrastructure.

Scope and areas evaluated

This project is carried out at Mariscal Sucre International Airport, the main airport in Quito, Ecuador, where the airside pavements (runway, taxiways, aprons) and landside pavements (airport access roads and service roads) are evaluated, covering an approximate total area of 774,115 m².

Área Element Área m² Evaluated surface area m²
Airside (runway, taxiways, aprons, etc.) Runways 184.589 671.482
Taxiways 303.666
Apron & Service Roads 183.227
Landside (roads, access routes, various zones) VS 102.634 102.634
Total 774.115 774.115

The scope includes: Field measurements for functional and surface evaluation (using an MFV vehicle), core sampling of the asphalt layer for laboratory analysis, and performing functional (BBI calculation), surface (PCI calculation and distress inventory), and structural analyses (ACN-PCN and ACR-PCR updates), along with the update of the pavement management system.

Calculations, analyses, and results are integrated to determine the current and actual condition of the pavements, guaranteeing operational safety and efficiency in the airport infrastructure.

By means of FAA and ICAO international standards, it is possible to determine parameters such as: the Boeing Bump Index (BBI) on the runway to assess its surface roughness, a distress inventory, and the calculation of the Pavement Condition Index (PCI), as well as the updating of the ACN-PCN and ACR-PCR methods. Collectively, these data are integrated into the Pavement Management System (PMS) to develop deterioration models that assist in predicting and planning short-, medium-, and long-term maintenance and rehabilitation interventions, thereby optimizing resources and extending the service life of airport pavements.
