Strinso was contracted to carry out the definitive pavement rehabilitation design for the Pan-Americana Este highway corridor, which connects the province of Las Garzas with Yaviza, in Darién, along a two-lane bidirectional road spanning 246.2 km in length per carriageway.

The study covered three distinct sections differentiated by their surface type and structural condition, including sectors such as the main mainline, bus bays, and shoulders. The objective was to propose up to two design alternatives per subsection, based on field data and studies supplied by the client, ensuring durable, safe structures adapted to future traffic loads.

The objective of this project was to design the definitive pavement rehabilitation solution for the Pan-Americana Este corridor (Las Garzas – Yaviza section), based on the technical data provided by OHLA Panamá and previous field studies. The goal was to propose up to two intervention alternatives per subsection, ensuring structural durability, user safety, and cost efficiency in both construction and maintenance.

This design had to consider:

  • The current structural and functional conditions of the road.
  • The estimated future traffic loads.
  • The different existing surface types (flexible, rigid, and Superpave mix types).
  • The climatic, geological, and operational conditions.
  • The design approach is based on internationally recognized methodologies (AASHTO and PCA), adapted to the specific context of the project.
